News SACC RESPONDS TO SNOW TRAGEDY

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has responded swiftly to the human tragedy involving scores of people trapped in the snow in parts of the Eastern Cape by donating 600 blankets which are being ferried to affected areas.

However, the SACC major concern is that houses - both formal and informal - are being buried under the snow. "Our concern is that thousands of families could be rendered homeless, a matter that could result in serious health problems," said the SACC general secretariat spokesperson, Rev White Rakuba.

In a statement issued today, Rev Rakuba has called on member churches in the affected areas to open their hearts, and offer whatever assistance they can give in order to alleviate the plight of the affected communities.

The required assistance may come in the form of food parcels, blankets, and whatever relief assistance communities and individuals can offer.

"The SACC is calling on all good Samaritans in and around the affected areas to be generous and render assistance," said Rev Rakuba.

As many families have been rendered homeless, it would be preferable if corporations - large and small - can come to the fore and donate more blankets to ensure that people do not die from exposure.
