A delegation of South African church leaders, led by Methodist Bishop Ivan Abrahams, Chair of the South African Church Leaders Forum, has returned from a pastoral visit to Zimbabwe calling for new action to end the suffering of the people of Zimbabwe.
The visit follows last week's decision by the Central Committee of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) to condemn the Zimbabwean government's "Operation Murambatsvina" and to launch a major relief initiative. The SACC leadership also briefed President Mbeki on its action and has been assured of the government's support.
The church leaders travelled to Harare this week to express their concern for and solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe, to share with Zimbabwe's churches the views of the SACC Central Committee, and to reflect with their counterparts on what further action is necessary.
"The delegation was cordially received by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches," Bishop Abrahams reported. "They welcomed the promise of relief as a message of hope in a desperate situation."
The Zimbabwe churches reiterated their understanding of the intentions underlying Operation Murambatsvina, but they strongly rejected the methods used, which have caused unnecessary pain to many people and have ignored the needs of vulnerable communities. The initiative has destroyed the capacity of many previously self-sufficient households to earn livelihoods.
As a result of these consultations, the church leaders agreed to launch a new relief initiative, dubbed "Operation Hope for Zimbabwe". The campaign is designed to:
- Provide immediate relief -- in the form of blankets, food, water and medicine -- to all affected by Operation Murambatsvina, but particularly the most vulnerable sectors of the society: those living in transit camps, the elderly and women with children;
- Explore ways of providing shelter for those who have been made homeless by Operation Murambatsvina; and
- Work with other international agencies, such as the World Food Programme, UNICEF and UN-HABITAT, to promote long-term development in Zimbabwe.
There was consensus that Operation Hope for Zimbabwe will be managed and co-ordinated by the churches, working together with the affected communities.
The SACC is inviting all South Africans to contribute to the campaign. "I appeal to all people of good conscience to restore hope and dignity to our sisters and brothers in Zimbabwe by supporting this initiative generously," Bishop Abrahams said. "However humble your gift, you will be sending a powerful message to displaced families, letting them know that someone cares and giving them hope for a brighter tomorrow."
The General Secretary of the SACC, Dr. Molefe Tsele, urged all sectors of society -- government, business, trade unions and other faith communities -- to join the churches in building the campaign and making it "a beacon of hope to our neighbours in Zimbabwe".
Contributions to Operation Hope Zimbabwe may be deposited to SACC Emergency Relief Trust, Account Number 1979 410 526, Nedbank, Fox Street Branch, Branch Code 190805, Swift Code NEDSZAJJ. Please designate your donation by writing "HOPE ZIMBABWE" in the reference line.
The SACC Central Committee has also called for continuing prayers for the people of Zimbabwe and the resolution of the political crisis there.
