To highlight the urgency of peace in Palestine and Israel after 40 years of occupation, the World Council of Churches (WCC), member churches and related organizations are organizing a week of prayers, seminars and advocacy to mark this June's anniversary of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The goal of the week is to raise awareness in churches and civil society and to impress upon governments the need for new efforts to end the conflict and negotiate a just settlement. The initiative is called "International Church Action for Peace in Palestine and Israel (ICAPPI), 3-9 June 2007".
In South Africa, the programme for the week is organized by the South African Council of Churches. Activities will include worship services throughout the country. Copies of the liturgy and messages from the churches in Jerusalem have been sent to Church Leaders and the Ecumenical Accompaniers. Ecumenical Accompaniers(EAs)who are South African volunteers who have lived with those affected by the occupation will speak at some of the worship services. (If any church/congregation should wish to have a speaker at its service, you may contact Luke Pato at the number provided below and will help you find an EA. Other activities will include marches and rallies in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town on the 9th and 10th June. There will also be a peaceful Vigil at the Israeli embassy in Johannesburg on Friday 8th. Some EAs will host public lectures at the University of Johannesburg and Rhodes. Press release will be issued in various local newspapers to carry the ICAPPI week’s message.
