News ACT NOW ON CLIMATE CHANGE, SACC URGES

The SACC endorses the UN Conference on Climate Change (UNFCC), being held in Copenhagen, as a very significant and historical event. We recognise that the Kyoto Protocols can be taken a step further, provided that the political will exists. The onus is therefore on political leaders to accept the challenges on significant and meaningful emission reductions to demonstrate their commitment in controlling climate changes. Political will is in itself not significant, but has to be accompanied by legally binding agreements overseen by the United Nations.

The SACC recognises that as citizens we are also challenged to change our own behaviour and the way we contribute towards the devastation of our environment and this earth we live in. Climate change is life threatening, It is not only threatening human life, but the life of other living species that makes this world the space for human habitation.

The SACC always considered the integrity of creation as an integral part of our Christian responsibility. During 2008 a subcommittee was formed to assist churches in meeting the challenges of climate change. This resulted in the publication of an ecumenical book entitled “”, released in November 2009.

Since the publication of the book South African Church structures and Christian leaders were invited to endorse the book. At present 24 church structures and 211 Christian leaders have endorsed the book.. This represents a broad and diverse endorsement from within South Africa. (A list of endorsements is available on the SACC web site). As part of the endorsement process, the book was launched at St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town (30 November) and at Diakonia Council of Churches in Durban (8 December 2009).

As a next step in the process, the SACC will start considering ways to assist church members in making the content of the book become a reality in our daily lives. What happens at the conference in Copenhagen is of vital importance in promoting this agenda. Therefore the SACC welcomes and supports the letter written to President Jacob Zuma by the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba.

We join Archbishop Makgoba in urging President Zuma and our entire nation to “seek justice and righteousness for all -- all people and all of creation… We have a responsibility to God and to future generations to care for this planet- our home”.

The SACC believes that issues around ecological debt and eco-justice, particularly in Africa’s extractive industries, are key elements in the attainment of the UN Millennium Development Goals. Equally so is ensuring that the Global Environment Funds/LDC funding processes for climate change adaptation through a transparent National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA) is instituted.

We are hopeful that a fair, ambitious and binding deal with be adopted at the Conference of Parties (COP) of the UNFCC in Copenhagen, based on climate justice principles, which will include effective support to vulnerable nations and communities, enabling them to adapt to the consequences of climate change through adaptation funds and technology transfers.

The SACCs commends the participation of Pres Zuma and other African political leaders at this historic conference. We look forward to them returning home with good news. There are a number of ecumenical agencies and civil society groups engaged in advocacy lobbying and monitoring of UNFCC processes and we trust that their opinions will be considered and accommodated in plans for the future of our world.

The SACC supports the global efforts to remind the delegates in Copenhagen of the ultimate target of reducing the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to below 350 ppm - through vigils, bell ringing and mass demonstrations over the weekend of 11-13 December. Local congregations are encouraged to take this into account in their liturgies, preaching and prayers.
