News GLOBAL WEEK OF ACTION ON TRADE

We as Churches are called to advocate for just trade and be agents of transformation, even as we are entangled in, and complicit with, the very system we are called to change. Just trade must benefit all people and protect the environment.

- Sam Kobia, General Secretary, World Council of Churches

We live in a world of outrageous inequality. Millions of people are trapped in poverty. More than anything else, it is the institutions, conditions, rules and practices of international trade that keep people poor. It is now more important than ever that this situation be transformed.

In November 2003, over 100 trade activists from 50 countries came together for an International Trade Campaign Conference in Delhi, India. On the final day, the delegates issued a bold call for a Global Week of Action. This was discussed with international networks before being presented at a seminar of 500 people at the World Social Forum in Mumbai, India in January 2004.

Since then, the idea has grown and spread around the world. The Global Week of Action, organised for 10-16 April 2005, seeks to draw attention to the injustices of current international trade rules and to advocate for changes that can make a difference in the lives of millions of the world's poorest people.

The Global Week of Action is not a new network or campaign. It is an opportunity for existing networks and campaigns to take action with others. It is not led by an organisation or a steering committee. Any one can take part, and there are many different ways to participate. You can do things at home, in your church or place of worship, at work, when you are shopping. You can do things alone or with others.

The Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance has put together a wide range of resources to assist you, including a Worship Guide and an Action Guide. You can also visit Christian Aid's Global Week of Action site to see a list of events going on around the world and to read reports on what's happening.

Although the Global Week of Action will be a time of particular visibility for the international trade justice campaign, the campaign doesn't end on 16 April. There will be an continuing need for action throughout the year ... and beyond. So find out more and be inspired!
