As part of the South African Council of Churches’ (SACC) continuing tsunami relief effort, the General Secretary, the Rev. Dr. Molefe Tsele, will present churches in the horn of Africa with a cheque for R500 000 on Wednesday.
Rev. Fred Nyabera of the Nairobi-based Fellowship of Christian Councils of Churches in the Great Lakes Region and the Horn of Africa (FECCLAHA) will receive the donation in a brief ceremony to be held in the SACC chapel (Khotso House, 1st floor, 62 Marshall Street, Johannesburg) at 12h00 noon on Wednesday, 6 July.
The donation marks the six-month anniversary of the devastating 26 December “seaquake” and tsunami that caused extensive damage throughout much of South Asia and along the east coast of Africa.
In January, Dr. Tsele and Anglican Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane paid a pastoral visit to Somalia. During the trip, they delivered an initial R500 000 tranche of relief funds.
Immediately after the tsunami, the SACC asked its member churches to take up special offerings for victims of the disaster. The Council also organised a special gospel concert to raise funds for the relief effort.
