The South African Council of Churches (SACC) will send a pastoral delegation to meet with Deputy President Jacob Zuma in Midrand this evening (Monday, 6 June). The delegation will be made up of senior clerics, including: the Rev. Dr. Molefe Tsele, General Secretary of the SACC, Bishop Ivan Abrahams, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church in Southern Africa, and the Rt. Rev. Jo Seoka, Anglican Bishop of Pretoria.
The delegation will demonstrate the churches' concern for the Deputy President by providing a ministry of accompaniment as he deliberates on the implications of the Durban High Court's judgement in the Schabir Shaik corruption trial. The meeting will also give members of the delegation an opportunity to gain insight from the Deputy President about the broader issues related to the judgement so that they may advise the leaders of the SACC's 26 member denominations on appropriate responses to situation.
The meeting is scheduled to conclude at 18h30. The SACC General Secretary may be contacted by telephone for further comment after the meeting.
