News ZUMA DECISION SHOWS STRENGTH OF SA DEMOCRACY

The General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches, the Rev. Dr. Molefe Tsele, greeted today's announcement concerning Deputy President Jacob Zuma with relief and satisfaction.

"We have passed the test," Dr. Tsele remarked shortly after President Thabo Mbeki told a joint session of Parliament that the Deputy President had been relieved of his duties. "This is a watershed in the development of our young democracy. We have entered a new era."

The General Secretary commended the entire Cabinet for their unambiguous and responsible decision. "We know that this could not have been an easy step to take. We can only imagine the anxious debates and searches for appropriate action that preceded this announcement."

On behalf of the Council, Dr. Tsele expressed pride in the strength and resilience of South Africa's Constitution and democratic institutions. He said the decision was "entirely consistent with the values enshrined in our Constitution."

The SACC shares with the Executive and Parliament a deep respect for the Deputy President and for the enormous and laudable contributions he has made to the freedom and democracy, not only in South Africa but many other places around the Continent.

"Whilst we are saddened by the circumstances in which this difficult decision was taken, we are praying that it will not diminish Mr. Zuma's exemplary contribution to the enhancement of human dignity, growth and development for many African people" said Dr. Tsele. "We are equally hopeful that Mr. Zuma will not be deterred from living for the noble ideals to which he has aspired his entire life. We commend him for the grace with which he has accepted the Cabinet's decision and for putting national unity and respect for democratic institutions above his personal situation."

The General Secretary acknowledged that the Executive's decision would not please all South Africans. However, he urged: "Let this be a time when we put aside political differences and rally around our Constitution and the democratic values it reflects."
